From December 4 to 6, 2008, ASMI China attended the Food Hotel China (FHC) show in Shanghai. FHC is one of the largest international food shows in China. It showcases food from China and abroad. The FHC show mainly focuses on hotel and restaurant industry (HRI) members. This was the first time that ASMI China participated in the show, making this a significant event for ASMI China.

During the show, various species of Alaska seafood, including five species of Alaska Salmon, Black Cod, Halibut, Pacific Cod, Pollock, Yellow-fin Sole, Perch, Bering Cisco, King Crab, Snow Crab and Dungeness Crab were displayed. The three-day show provided ASMI China with the opportunity to meet many new traders and customers from the HRI sector. By introducing them to Alaska seafood and answering their questions about the products, ASMI was able to begin building relationships, with a view toward long-term co-operation. As a result of this activity, ASMI China received over 80 trade leads requesting different species of Alaska seafood. During the show, Secretary Schafer of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) visited the ASMI booth and tasted Alaska salmon.

By providing free samples of Alaska smoked salmon, Alaska salmon roe and Alaska snow crab, ASMI allowed visitors to gain a better understanding of Alaska seafood. For some it was the first time they had tasted Alaska seafood. Most of the visitors spoke highly of the products, especially the chefs. They showed a great deal of interest in Alaska seafood and asked as to how to source the products locally. The flavor impressed many in attendance; over 15 chefs expressed an interest in hosting an Alaska seafood festival. One notable example was the executive chef from VaBene in Shanghai’s exclusive Xin Tian Di district. VaBene is a part of a group of Italian restaurants, with other members located in Hangzhou and Hong Kong. Upcoming promotions, scheduled for March 2009, are proposed to take place at restaurants in these three cities. For ASMI China this represents an excellent platform for more promotional activities.

The high quality and high-end nature of Alaska seafood received a lot of attention at the show. As a result, ASMI China received hundreds of business cards from different companies from both home and abroad. This has allowed ASMI China to explore new relationships with high caliber partners for the future and will assist in further promoting Alaska seafood.
